Which is better: Amazon Kindle or Sony Reader?

The Sony Reader is much more widely known as an e-book reader than the newer Amazon Kindle. However, popularity isn't everything. A quick comparison of benefits and features will lead quickly to the realization that the Kindle is the most advanced and easy to use e-book reader currently on the market.

Readability

An e-book reader has to be comfortable to read to be worth much of anything. Both the Sony Reader and the Kindle use about the same technology for their screens. However, the Kindle screen is a bit larger, making things a bit easier to read even if you choose the larger font. Both e-book readers allow you to choose the size of the print, and both are designed to limit eye strain.

Portability and Comfort

Both the Sony Reader and the Amazon Kindle are lightweight, around ten ounces. The Kindle is larger than the Sony Reader, but for good reason. The Kindle has more shock absorbancy than the Reader. This is important, since Sony will charge almost as much to fix an e-book reader as they charge for a new one. While the Sony is more compact, the Kindle's size allows for larger buttons that are easier to use. It also has a keyboard that makes browsing for titles much easier than on the Sony Reader, which only provides various buttons and arrows for navigation.

Some think that the slightly larger size of the Kindle takes away from its comfort level, but those who have actually used the Kindle disagree. The Sony Reader may be more compact and easy to curl up in bed with, but the Kindle is just as portable. And, since you can download e-books directly with the Kindle, you have the added comfort of not having to leave your warm bed to start a new book.

Convenience

There is really no comparison when looking at the convenience offered by these two e-book readers. The Sony Reader allows you to download e-books into the reader using your desktop computer, through a USB port. You can also insert an SD memory card into the Reader to allow more e-books and information. The Kindle allows these options and more. With Amazon Kindle you have the ability to download e-books, newspapers, and magazines directly into the e-book reader. This is done using the same wireless broadband technology used in cell phones. There are no monthly fees for the service, so you get all of the convenience and none of the cost. The Sony Reader also holds more than one hundred fewer e-books than the Kindle.

Price

Everyone wants to take a look at price. Really, the prices between the Amazon Kindle and the Sony Reader are pretty close. However, the Kindle gives you access to Amazon's best e-books and at the lowest prices. Additionally, you save time and money by being able to download directly into the Kindle. You don't have to have a PC or pay for any type of internet connection to download e-books.

So Which is Better?

It is pretty clear that the Amazon Kindle outranks the Sony Reader in almost every area. The Kindle is definitely better for the busy traveler or executive, offering the easiest methods of downloading and the longest battery life. The Amazon Kindle is also better for the elderly, with larger navigation buttons and the ability to use the e-book reader without a PC. Children and elderly alike will enjoy the fact that they do not need to know how to navigate the internet or learn how to use a USB download to have great material to read all the time. Overall, the Amazon Kindle is well on its way to becoming the best in e-book reader technology.
